value judgement
At this point in my life, I am struggling with whether it is better to judge things based on values of good or bad, or beautiful and ugly. I’m leaning towards value based on beauty. Which do you think is more important? Productive?

yea-nay voting
Voting with yeas and nays seems like a really bad way to vote. Excluding voting in smaller meetings using Robert’s Rules of Order where there’s usually just some smart mouth saying “nay” for a laugh (me).  But think about Congress using a yea-nay vote to decide something important. What if the “yeas” are those big, loud, old Republican suits? They’re probably really good at projecting their...

ricky gervais
I am highly recommending Ricky Gervais’s podcasts on iTunes. I’ve listened to them all in a row and got high from laughing so much. He has this beautiful way of turning tragic things just slightly enough that we can laugh about them while still acknowledging the sadness.

I think my productivity at work would go way up I were sitting on a saddle with stirrups instead of this boring office chair.

The main reason I, until recently, believed in an afterlife was because it scared me to think that after I died, there would be nothing. I think most people tend to believe in some form of life after death for this reason. But now I hope that when I die it will be just like before I was born. It has never scared me to think about the time before I was alive because history is documented. I can...

Can Native Speakers of a Language Make Mistakes?
hot4discourse:is a 1961 speech by Allen Walker Read - he decides that “No” they cannot - and I can’t find it anywhere online. Can anyone help me find a copy? He also discovered that OK comes from the misspelling and abbreviation craze of newspapers during the 1830’s (all correct became Oll Korrect which became OK). This stuff blows my mind. Cool! I just posted something similar about all words...

Hey Webster’s!
farfaraway wrote:How did “brunch” slip past the system?  It’s a fake word.  You can’t just slam to words together and throw it in the dictionary.  If that’s now the case, I nominate “stucision.”  It’s my combination of “stupid” and “decision,” as in, “making brunch a real word was a stucision.” I challenge! How do you think the English language was formed in the first place? According to your...

self-centered altruism
Yesterday I told a man who works down the hall from me, “cool moustache.” I then felt the need to write him an email, making sure he knew it was a genuine compliment, and not a joke. The whole experience made me feel really good. I’ve decided to continue handing out well-deserved, genuine compliments when I feel like feeling good. I do this same thing only with volunteering. I...

aging differently
me: I never thought I would get to 24 or 25 or any age beyond 17
Katie: 17 was my dream age
me: it used to be that 24 was like adult - like real women were 24. I'm so young and i dont feel like a "real woman." I don't know how mom and dad were able to raise me when they were just 24.
I think people grew up faster back then
Katie: no kidding. even in videos and such they seem so much older than you are now. Maybe it's just because we see them now as old, and the pictures themselves look old.
me: maybe. but I truly believe people are aging differently. I think it's because of our value systems. What's important to them is not at all what's important to me.
I want to travel and do things for myself -- but they wanted kids by my age.
A few folks my age are like that but i wouldn't say the majority.
Katie: do you also think a factor in this is that kids aren't necessarily kicked out of their parents' house after high school? I think we are kind of allowed to be young longer
me: agreed
Katie: its a new generation baby

drumspeak
I enjoy hearing how other people say their drums talk. When drummers describe licks using their mouths and voices to sound like the drums — I call this drumspeak.  Carl’s drumspeak: snare says gack bass says uung toms say goong cymbals can say skkksshhhh, blam, or crash chinas always say “china” I asked Thommy Browne, about his drumspeak. His bass says “doom”...

Vimeo Etiquette
dawkeye: Last night a discussion between myself and SteveR took place on the vexed question of “like its” on Vimeo. Steve says: I should automatically click on “like it” for his latest effort, since he does on all of mine. I argue that: a) The number of “like it’s” are finite, and so should be reserved for videos that you consider in some way exceptional. b) Giving them automatically to...
